In William Shakespeares Hamlet, several themes within the play comprise its story line and ultimately holds major influences on the plot. Conflict underlies almost every scene and is reinforced by the central idea of revenge. Several characters attempt to entice their enemies and even lead them to their own death through schemeful acts of manipulation. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Central Idea of Revenge in William Shakespeares Hamlet" essay for you Create order The idea of revenge is first presented when Shakespeare creates conflict with Hamlet and Claudius which leads to a series of betrayals, treachery and deception. Revenge is the underlying theme within the storyline and is reinforced with motifs of power and corruption leading to the vengeance most of the characters seek to obtain. When developing the central focus of the play, Shakespeare inserts a dialogue between the ghost that haunts the castle and Hamlet,Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder, (I.v.25) indicating and introducing a revenge plot between Claudius and Hamlet. Much is said between this dialogue which invigorates Hamlets pursuit of revenge. Instead of rushing to accuse Claudius of such tragic crime, Hamlet ponders upon what he believes is a more effective and schemeful alternative. He decides to dominate Claudius through guilt by presenting a play that would ultimately expose him. The true accounts of King Hamlets death would come to light in front of all and Claudius reaction would confirm his criminality. Throughout the whole play, the driving force is Hamlets ambition to inflict total vengeance of his fathers murder. Through a series of developed plans to trick one another, Shakespeare creates a plot focused essentially on revenge. Specifically, it plays a major role in the development of the characters within the play Fortinbras, Hamlet and Laertes as they all approach the same desire for revenge while pursuing it differently. Although Hamlet has met with the ghost of his father who specifically instructs him to gain revenge in the name of his murder, Hamlet seems uncertain to kill his uncle as a form of payback. However, upon his fathers command Hamlet swears to retaliate in some form against Claudius and promises to prove his love and loyalty by fulfilling his duty as son. Unlike Fortinbras and Laertes, Hamlet did not question the motive of his advisor and why he should take the advice but as time passes he feels as though hes fallen short with gaining ultimate revenge and begins to doubt himself. Out of disgust Hamlet says, What an ass am I! This is most brave, that I, the son of a dear fath er murdered, prompted to my revenge by heaven and hell and must like a whore unpack my heart with words and fall a-cursing like a very drab (II.ii. 594-598) This statement is a clear indication that Hamlet knows how he should act and what initiatives he should take but does not want to act out so hastily. After reaching his breaking point and seems on edge of madness, Hamlet acts out destructively and kills Polonious father of Laertes whom upon hearing of his fathers murder reacts swiftly. After being notified that Hamlet is responsible for his fathers murder he swears he will have revenge, Only Ill be revenged. Most thoroughly for my father. (IV.v. 133 134). He immediately agrees to take part in the Kings plan to kill Hamlet and conspires with the king to deceive and challenge him to a fencing match where Laertes will kill Hamlet with a poisoned sword. For reassurance, Claudius prepares another form of murder in case all else fails and prepares a cup filled with poison for Hamlet. Although claudius and Laertes seem to prepare themselves for the murder of Hamlet, their death comes along with it too, which points back to the theme of vengeance. Young Fortinbras motive is to essentially regain the land that his father has lost to Hamlets father. Over the years, Fortinbras has brewed up a plan to avenge his fathers death. He has lived in Norway for many years, undisturbed by the Danish Crown, which has had its own problems in the past, including the death of their king and the reelection of an incompetent, know nothing king. With Claudius, the new King in power, Norway is able to go on with their plans of reconquest of the lost territory. Shakespeare depends on the reactions of Hamlet, Fortinbras and Laertes to convey the theme of revenge. Their rage has taken different forms and collectively reveals the i diversity of human feelings in bringing the theme of revenge into life. Hamlet, who acts slowly and with much contemplation, and Laertes, who acts with intense anger show polar opposites amongst these two characters. Meanwhile, Fortinbras rationality and deliberate measurements represents in some sense a combination of the two. The play shows the strain of knowing the truth about people, living in a world of appearances. Fundamentally, Hamlet expresses the dilemma of living in that world. Marcellus remark Something is rotten in the state of Denmark (Hamlet 1.2. 65), reveals the corruption that is found on all levels in the state. As a result, there are frequent references to corruption. Claudius is irredeemably corrupt, guilty of the murder of not only a king but his brother as a King. Hamlet refers to Claudius as a Canker in our nature (Hamlet 2.2. 290). The relationship between Claudius and Gertrude, which starts with adultery, is immoral, but this is overlooked. Because of the vengeance that both Laertes and Hamlet take, revenge is a major theme in Hamlet. It seems ironic that the three characters who were involved with all of the revenge (Claudius, Laertes, and Hamlet) all died from the same sword. Revenge was the driving force behind both Laertes and Hamlet, but both of them also approached their downfall because of it. Their lack of thought behind their plans not only eventually killed them, but Laertes lack of thought also killed his partner in the conspiracy to kill Hamlet, King Claudius, which realized Hamlets revenge. Hamlets revenge is delayed in three significant ways. First, he must establish Claudius guilt, which he does in Act 3, Scene 2 by presenting the murder of his father in a play. When Claudius storms out during the performance, Hamlet becomes convinced of his guilt. Hamlet then considers his revenge at length, in contrast to the rash actions of Fortinbras and Laertes. For example, Hamlet has the opportunity to kill Claudius in Act 3, Scene 3. He draws his sword but is concerned that Claudius will go to heaven if killed while praying. After killing Polonius, Hamlet is sent to England making it impossible for him to gain access to Claudius and carry out his revenge. During his trip, he decides to become more headstrong in his desire for revenge. Although he does ultimately kill Claudius in the final scene of the play, its not due to any scheme or plan by Hamlet, rather, it is Claudius plan to kill Hamlet that backfires. Revenge is represented as the ultimate destructive force in Hamlet. It draws out the worst traits in the characters seeking it, and has negative consequences on bystanders. For a play to be considered a revenge tragedy, revenge has to be a prevalent theme throughout. Revenge needs to be intertwined in character interactions, and have a strong hold on the driving force of the plot. The desires of Hamlet, Laertes, and young Fortinbras each exhibit how the plot of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare revolves entirely around revenge. The theme of revenge starts off very early in the play, when Hamlet speaks with the ghost of his deceased father. When the ghost tells Hamlet how Claudius murdered him, Hamlet is infuriated and overtaken with feelings of responsibility to right the wrong that has been done; to murder Claudius. Hamlet, through soliloquy, tells his audience that he has a master plan of revenge for his father. He plans to act insane, and commits to the role very well; almost too well. The portrayal of Hamlets initial undertaking of his insanity act is easily shown by what he says to Gertrude, That essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft. This shows that Hamlet was only acting crazy as a component of his revenge scheme. However, later in the play we witness the murder of Polonius by Hamlet. Hamlet killed Polonius without meaning to, thinking he was killing the king who murdered his father. But right as he realizes what he has done, he has no sympathy or regret for his actions, and simply brushes it off as a mistake well spent. Hamlet says after the deed, How now? A rat? Dead, for a ducat, dead! Hamlet (III, iv, 23) This quote is clearly an argument for Hamlets right state of mind, and only further develops the plot of the story. He begins to become a reckless killing machine, which cha nges from what he wanted in the beginning; to only kill Claudius.

Future Energy Free Essays
Future energy Have you ever thought about the energy providing you electricity for your daily life that nuclear power could take you off from this world (it is not clear what you mean here)? What was your feeling when you watching news about the Fukushima nuclear crisis? What do you think when you see how victims of Chernobyl disaster live today? Good start ââ¬â the questions are a very good way to get your readerââ¬â¢s attention. ) All of those issues are just because of one reason ââ¬â the safety problem of nuclear power. The question is: Can we control it completely? This question is not only for some people or some groups; the /a specific government (or governments? as with your other essays on this topic, be clear about what you mean. We will write a custom essay sample on Future Energy or any similar topic only for you Order Now Are you thinking about one specific government? Governments in general? ) should consider their citizens and, even every single species living on this planet. Apparently, some countriesy could not dominate nuclear power so that tragedy was happened and severely affected on millions of people. For this reason, I think government (again, be clear ââ¬â one specific government? Governments in general? should replace nuclear power by alternatives such as solar electrical energy ? Is this supposed to be here? generation and wind electric power generation. Sustainabilityle is the most important index for every type of energy resource. People argues that nuclear is the most sustainable energy resource they have. The fuel of nuclear power cost that uranium and plutonium is the precious metals in the nature (? It is not clear what you mean here). But people who support nuclear power seems to have ignored the fact that the storage of precious metals is very low; it has some day that exhaust from the Earth (awkward ââ¬â perhaps ââ¬Å"will some day be exhausted from the earthâ⬠? ). People know that wind energy and solar energy all have been exploited (this is really the heart of your argument in this paragraph, but this part of the sentence is not clear. What do you mean they have been exploited? This sounds like a negative thing, not a positive thing as you argument should suggest. ). The fuel cost of those two energy resources is zero. They are enduring energy resources, unless the sun disappears from sky and the Earth stops revolving. Spinning. So for the issue of resources (you started the paragraph with the idea of sustainability. It would be a good idea to end your argument in this paragraph with that as well. ), solar energy (what about wind energy? ) is better than nuclear power. Other than sustainabilityle, the cost of running and maintaining a nuclear power plant is the important point that people find? interesting. For every power plant, people will spend money on planning, designing, constructing, running, maintaining it. Every single step in this process will cost amount of money to make sure the plant will works well. And the cost of materials and cost of maintenance is the significant chunk of the whole cost (what is the cost comparison? Do you have some statistics/figures that support your argument here? ). People (who are these ââ¬Ëpeopleââ¬â¢ you keep writing about? Do you have some support from experts on this topic that you could bring into your argument? ) are saying that traditional electric plants will cost too much money on materials and maintenance. So they think nuclear power plant is the best choice for finance. For nuclear power plant, it will cost only less than a hundred tons of nuclear material for every year; nevertheless, the cost of designing and planning a nuclear power plant is much higher than traditional electric plant. It cost huge number of money on safety, but it still does not work well. However, for solar electrical energy generation and wind electric power generation, it cosst much less on designing and constructing than nuclear power plants, even none on fuels. I suggest government to calculate the price-performance ratio of setting a plant. O. k. Good suggestion, but what is the cost comparison? How do you know that these differences in cost exist? For every factory or plant, people always focus on how its productivity is. But the hot potato of pollution is getting more necessary (? I am not sure what you mean here). They might think more about how much discharges will it waste and how to dispose of those discharge more thoroughly. It has been argued that the most important advantage of nuclear power plant is its low discharging. And people who holding this opinion think nuclear power plants are very eco-friendly for environment. They contend that there is no gaseous pollutants discharge from nuclear power plants. But we can not ignore that the nuclear radiation from nuclear power plant waste is much more dangerous than gaseous pollutants that very harmful for the human and the nature. For the human body, when the radiation value get overtakes more thanthe threshold, it will damage the tissue in the body. People still haves no effective method to dispose of the Radioactive Nuclear Waste that all this three method can not restrain the radiation come out (? this is unclear). It will damage the soil and the ocean andthat threatens the other species. Even today, the nuclear radiation from Chernobyl disaster continues to influence on the soil and water. Ukraine has millions of victims affected by this accident. And now, some of them died by cancer, some of them are still living under the shadow of the Chernobyl disaster. Nevertheless, there is no problem on discharge of solar electrical energy generation and wind electric power generation. (you need to say more about this ââ¬â give more of a comparison in order to make your argument stronger. So I am highly recommending that government should consider the future of human race. In conclusion, people who support nuclear power strongly are holding strong reasons (ââ¬Å"have good reasonsâ⬠? So that you don;t repeat ââ¬Ëstrongââ¬â¢). But it is not suitable for nowadays anymore. People should learn to embrace new technology to replace the old one. The Government should use new energies to make sure peopleââ¬â¢s life can be proceeding and secure, and human race can be inherit prosperous. As Meador (1978) says: ââ¬Å"There is no way to know absolutely about the future until we make the journeyâ⬠. , said by Meador (1978). This is a great way to end, Mike. Mike ââ¬â You make a number of good points in this essay and you have organized it well. You have all of the elements of a good essay: a clear thesis statement, focused paragraphs with topic sentences and generally good connections between ideas. I have made a number of comments throughout your essay, though, of places where improvements are needed. My main comment is that you need to give more specific examples of the statements that you make. This means: ââ¬â ââ¬â Eliminating your use of ââ¬Å"Theyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Peopleâ⬠to describe those who hold opposite views to yours. These are large generalizations that make it easy for your reader to question the reality of what you are saying. If there are experts who hold these opinions, then be specific about who they are. ââ¬â Use sources and statistics to back up your arguments ââ¬â I have noted a number of places where you make some statements that are generalizations. These generalizations make your argument weaker than it could be. However, if you use statistics or confirmed facts to back up your generalizations, that would strengthen your argument. Source: You have a source listed at the end of your essay that seems like it might be a good one to support some of your arguments. Why didnââ¬â¢t you use more information from this source throughout your essay? Mark: 60/100 Reference: Meador, Roy. (1978). Future Energy Alternatives. Ann Arbor Science Publishers, Inc. 3, 112. Marketing Not Involve Individual Customers â⬠Massignmenthelp.Com
Question: Discuss About The Marketing Not Involve Individual Customers? Answer: Introduction Business-to-Business marketing, also known as B-To-B marketing is defined as a transaction that takes place between two business organization, typically being between one manufacturer and one wholesaler. This type of marketing does not involve the individual customers. In a typical supply chain, the supplier company buys the raw materials that are to be used for the manufacturing of the product. The finished products are then sold from the manufacturers to the wholesalers. This situation involves a B-To-B communication. This assignment highlights the B-To-B process of Blackwoods. The organizational buying decisions of the consumers are highlighted, along with identifying the needs of organizational target consumers of Blackwoods. The marketing mix used by the company has also been highlighted in this assignment. Blackwoods is one of the largest business organizations in the Wesfarmers Industrial and safety divisions. This company has a vital role to play in Australian industry. Being a B-To-B company, Blackwoods operates in diverse industries. Starting from mining to manufacturing companies, Blackwoods has a wide range of clients and customers (Armstrong et al., 2015). However, they do not involve in any business with the individual customers. The clients of Blackwoods are mainly manufacturing and mining industries, safety and healthcare divisions as well as educational organizations (Skard Nysveen, 2016). The products of Blackwoods include abrasives, adhesives, automotives, bearings, building and construction materials, clothing, electrical goods, fasteners and fixings, foot ware, glass materials, hardware, hose and fittings, hygiene and cleaning materials, ladders and platforms, lifting and riggings, lubricants (Chuang, 2014). The products also include manual handling and storage, office stationary and kitchen goods, paints and sprays, tubes and fittings, pumps, retail merchandise, safety equipments and a lot more. Thus, the clients and the customers vary at a huge range. Since the consumers vary at a wide range, hence the consumer buying decisions of each of the clients vary widely (Skard Nysveen, 2016). The organizational buying decision process is a critical one and could be divided into eight phases. These are as follows: Recognition of the need- The need for a particular product has to be recognized by a client company of Blackwoods. Since Blackwoods have a large variety of products, hence the clients have to understand their needs (Skard Nysveen, 2016). Description of the need- In this phase, the determination of the characteristics of the needs is to be matched with the recognition of the needs. The general characteristics such as reliability, price as well as durability are to be determined (Tollin, Christensen Wilke, 2015). Product specifications- The product specification includes the mapping of the needs of the customers and the selected product. The feasibility of the product, with that of the needs have to be determined in this phase. Supplier search- Once the need is recognised and the product specification matches the needs of the customers, the suppliers are searched for. The client ensures that the best supplier is chosen. In this case, Blackwoods is the supplier (Kleinaltenkamp, Plinke Geiger, 2016). Solicitation proposal- The qualified list of the suppliers is further scrutinized. The products of the suppliers are matched with each other, and compared to choose the best supplier, with high quality product and high durability (Skard Nysveen, 2016). Supplier selection- The pricing and the presentation of the suppliers are rated and the best supplier is chosen for the B-To-B transaction. Order routine specification- After the most suitable supplier is selected and finalised, the B-To-B transactions take place (Im et al., 2016). Performance review- In the final phase, the purchase is done and the review of the purchase decision is done. If the products purchased are durable and well-performing, then the purchase decision is a successful one. Thus, after eight phases, the consumer buying decision process is successfully completed. Since in this case B-To-B marketing takes place, hence the consumer companies, choose the clients critically, such that a long term buying relation could be established. The customers of Blackwoods range from the healthcare sector to educational institutes. Hence the targeted customers vary. However, in other B-To-B marketing, the products are less in variety. Hence, the clients are also limited in number. One of the major competitors of Blackwoods is National Tool Hire shop. The products of this company range from tools and equipments to machineries (Skard Nysveen, 2016). Hence the targeted customers are mainly the factories, in need of the tools and equipments. The healthcare and safety departments are need of the cleaning materials and safety tools (Spekman, 2015). However, the companies are in need of the tools and equipments, along with hardware, hose and fittings. Thus, as compared to other B-To-B marketing companies, Blackwoods has a wide range of customers. The key implications of the required marketing mix are as follows: Product- The products include abrasives, adhesives, automotives, bearings, building and construction materials, clothing, electrical goods, fasteners and fixings, foot ware, glass materials, hardware, hose and fittings, hygiene and cleaning materials, ladders and platforms, lifting and riggings, lubricants. Price- The price is moderate and affordable (Skard Nysveen, 2016). Place- The place includes online shopping, e-commerce as well as in-store outlet. Promotions- The promotions of the products include advertisement in the social media, print media. Conclusion Business-To-Business marketing is one of the most popular forms of marketing between two or more business organizations. The B-To-B trading usually takes place between a manufacturer and a wholesaler. Blackwoods is one of the most reputed B-To-B marketing organizations, trading in various essential goods and services. The range of the customers of the company is wide and attracts a variety of customers. The consumer buying decisions has been described in eight phases, and highlights the decision making process of a consumer. The consumer base of Blackwoods is as wide as its range of products, than the other contemporary competitors. The marketing mix that is used for Blackwoods is effective and most suitable for promoting the business of Blackwoods. References Armstrong, G., Kotler, P., Harker, M., Brennan, R. How to Write an Expository Essay on the History of Art
How to Write an Expository Essay on the History of Art What is the Expository Essay? The expository essay is something in which you explore a subject and allow the research to determine the direction of your writing. Your work here should present an exploration of a concept rather than proving things that you know. What is the Purpose? The purpose of this type of essay is to build upon your critical and analytical skills. In its course you are forced to look at a range of arguments and contribute to them, rather than focusing on a single element or argument at a time. Some essays ask that you look at one argument, but the expository essay asks that you review the whole conversation instead. How Is It Written? Well, the focus is the question and not a thesis statement like so many other writings. That being said, students have one of two ways to compose their essay effectively. The first is the ââ¬Å"in-processâ⬠method which provides more immediacy while the second is the ââ¬Å"retrospectiveâ⬠method which produces a more artistically designed writing piece. Remember that expository essay is meant to be chronical about your thoughts and the completed research which influenced them. Your work should address the questions related to content and responses to those questions that are currently under academic consideration. You should write about the strengths and weaknesses of the potential solutions that other people have provided to the problem. That said, below are some steps to follow in your writing: Think of a Topic Try and find a topic that stands out, a question or idea, broad of course, which you find amusing or interesting. Researching something, no matter how huge, will go much easier if the matter is interesting to you.If you are unable to think of something off the bat, try a ââ¬Å"free writingâ⬠exercise in which you set an alarm for roughly three minutes. Within these you keep your pen on the paper and simply write down all of the thoughts that you have until youââ¬â¢ve cleared enough space in your consciousness for your subconscious ideas to kick in and topics to come up. When the alarm goes off, look over your paper to see if there are any suitable topics. Start Taking Notes As you begin your research, chronicle your findings. Take notes on the things you have read. Include everything. Afterwards, review the potential problems or questions within and the suggested solutions or answers for them. Review the debates and see what stands out to you. Reach a conclusion based on taken notes and findings. Start Writing With notes out of the way, you can begin the draft of your work which should be easily done thanks to the research method you have used up until this point. The first draft will need some mending of course. All initial drafts do so be on the lookout for punctuation or grammatical errors as well as the flow and coherence. If undecided about your future paper you should check our collection of facts for an expository essay on the History of Art along with 20 potential topics accompanied by one complete sample essay.

Feminist Analysis of the Window by Deborah Eisenberg Essay
Feminist Analysis of the Window by Deborah Eisenberg - Essay Example The ââ¬Å"Windowâ⬠is one of the most challenging stories in the collection "Twilight of the Superheroes." This story sketches the quest of a clueless young woman, Kristina, who flees her hometown after her year out of high school. She seeks material security and starts working as a waitress in an Eden resort town with ââ¬Å"white houses and gentle hills,â⬠a ââ¬Å"tender, miniature world.â⬠She moves in with a couple, who after a few months wants Kristina to move out, to accommodate their new baby. To continue to be a part of the community, Kristina marries Eli who occasionally comes into town andtakes her to hisisolated cabin deep in the woods. Though the marriage gets off to a fine start, Kristina finds challenge in rearing Eliââ¬â¢s toddler son. Being isolated in the cabin, Kristina slowly realizes that Eliââ¬â¢s first wife eloped due to suffering due to domestic violence. Though Eli repents to for his abusive behavior, Kristina decides to run out of Eliâ â¬â¢s life, ââ¬Ëkidnappingââ¬â¢ his son with her. She ends up with her estranged half-sister, from where she had originally fled in the beginning. The story is unfold in the mood of depressive reminiscence with its beginning and ending frames are fixed in Kristinaââ¬â¢s half-sisterââ¬â¢s home. These frames focused on the current situation of Kristina, where she is on a run low on money, and caring for Eliââ¬â¢s son, who has contracted an illness. ... We can see that Kristina is very confused and afraid while on the run and she expects and fears Eliââ¬â¢s anger and its impact on her future. In this story, Eisenberg is actively implying that there will be risk behind every decision, whether we will be able to see it or not. While providing us a detailed account of Kristinaââ¬â¢s fall from youth and emergence into adulthood, Eisenberg also opens out a window in to her psyche, to reveal the fury of conflicting emotionssuppressed within her heart, bordering her on the verge of explosions. But Eisenbergââ¬â¢s character is neither too weak to go numb before the looming danger, nor is she rebellious enough to stand up and assert her individuality. Instead, she is a woman in conflict with her own demons, her emotions and she is trying to run away from her husband and the danger of being kept in captivity and abused all her life. But, we can find that Kristina is far more courageous than Eliââ¬â¢s first wife, who deserted her c hild with Eli for ââ¬Å"unknown reasonsâ⬠, as Kristina chooses to take the child with her, pretending to avoid the probability of Eli hunting her down. In the opening scene of "Window", we find Kristina and Alma drinking coffee engaged in small talks, while the toddler is playing. The tension in the story starts to surface only when we come to know that Kristina and Alma are the estranged sisters who are trying to move on from their reminiscent and depressing past by forcefully engaging themselves in small talks. The tension felt in the scene forces us to delve deeper in to the story, which then, slowly opens a window to the past life of Kristina. The rendering of the story goes smooth but it get its power from those things that are kept untold and hidden. Eisenberg unwinds her story

International Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words - 18
International Business - Essay Example Although many scholars have worked to identify what the phenomenon of globalization is, they all have very conflicting views on what it actually is. The simplest way to describe the word has been done by Laurence e. Rothenberg who describes it as the acceleration and intensification of interaction and integration among the people, companies, and governments of different nations. This process has effects on human well-being (including health and personal safety), on the environment, on culture (including ideas, religion, and political systems), and on economic development and prosperity of societies across the world. Next it is important to identify how this came into being. The sudden rise in globalization can be attributed to the advances in communication technology. People all over the world want to remain connected with everyone, regardless of location and time. This means that now there scope of knowledge and information has broadened beyond their own city/country. People are now aware of the latest trends and happenings and this creates a simple need of wanting those same things in their own country. This has been identified by various corporate entities that look to expand their operations into other countries and tap into this prepared customer base. There are many advantages to globalization, some of them are: The integration of rich and poor nations is not a zero-sum game where the gains of one come at the expense of the other. Driven by the rapid democratization of information, technology, and finance, globalization is turning out to be a remarkably progressive, liberating force Globalization helps break the regressive taboos responsible for discriminating against people on the basis of gender, race, or religious beliefs. It is an antidote to the intolerant fundamentalism that oppresses millions of the worldââ¬â¢s poorest Globalization causes the poor citizens having more

Age of Discovery Events Before the Industrial Revolution
Age of Discovery Events Before the Industrial Revolution Age of discovery-events leading up to the Industrial Revolution, commenting on the following: currency, colonialism, recession, globilism, financial market, management theories and approaches, relationship between the past and present, economy, technology, revolution and people that contributed to the revolution. This paper presents an overview of the factors within the so-called ââ¬ËAge of Discoveryââ¬â¢ which engendered the industrial revolution in Britain. Although the industrial ââ¬Ërevolutionââ¬â¢ itself is usually periodised in the period 1750-1850, this is by no means a universally agreed principle. Some authorities, such as Berg, propose that what she terms the age of ââ¬Ëmanufacturesââ¬â¢ in fact ranged from 1700-1820. (1) As Berg herself explains, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦industrial growth took place over the whole of the eighteenth century, not just the last quarter of it. There was a substantial growth in the whole range of traditional industries as well as the most obviously exciting cases of cotton and iron.ââ¬â¢ (2) If this position is accepted, the age of discovery was contemporaneous with the industrial revolution. Whatever its precise chronological context, it is argued here that the provenance of the industrialization in Britain lays in a diffuse range of developm ents, many of which are far outside the timeframe of industrialization itself. The ideological framework was shaped during the Reformation and early modern period, which also saw the necessary financial and commercial developments take place. This in turn led to colonial expansion, technological growth, and was re-negotiated after foreign revolutions and cyclical recessions, all of which helped drive Britainââ¬â¢s impetus towards industrial expansion and self-sufficiency. The ideological and economic framework was arguably created by successive developments in sociology and financial infrastructure: the so called ââ¬Ëelectiveââ¬â¢ or protestant affinity with the idea of capitalism, and the financial ââ¬Ërevolutionââ¬â¢ which followed on the Glorious Revolution of 1688. The supposed pre-disposition of early modern English society towards particular forms of commercial development was proposed by figures such as R.H.Tawney and Max Weber as an ââ¬Ëelective affinityââ¬â¢ between the protestant ââ¬Ëasceticismââ¬â¢ and the spirit of capitalism. (3). Although this remains little more than a much-discussed theory, the economic individualism which became institutionalized in Britain during the late seventeenth century is much more tangible. It is also, arguably, profoundly constructive of the industrial revolution. The foundation of the Bank of England, the East India Company, and the proliferation of other large joint-stock ventures su ch as the South Sea Company, gave Britain both the incentive and the financial power to push out into expanding markets, looking for new commodities and raw materials. As Carruthers explains, ââ¬ËImprovements in the system of public borrowing were important in explaining the growing financial strength of the English stateâ⬠¦dramatic enough to be called a ââ¬Å"Financial Revolution.â⬠England was able to borrow more moneyâ⬠¦at lower rates of interest. The borrowing was mostly from domestic sourcesâ⬠¦thanks to the development of trade and commerce, there was in England a growing pool of available capital.ââ¬â¢ (4) The setting up of a large sinking fund was partly justified on the grounds of the continuing need to fund military conflict with European and imperial rivals: ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦improvements in revenues allowed for increased borrowing, and together they underwrote higher expenditures and a successful war effort.ââ¬â¢ (5) Unfortunately, the British reali zed that even victorious campaigns were ruinously expensive, as Colley relates: ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦the Seven Years War was the most dramatically successful war the British ever fought. They conquered Canadaâ⬠¦they assumed for themselves the reputation of being the most aggressive, the most affluent, and the most swiftly expanding power in the worldâ⬠¦yet the euphoria soon souredâ⬠¦there was the hard, unpleasant fact of the National Debt which led inexorably to the rise in taxation.ââ¬â¢ (6) However, fiscal control by the British government was itself to be a factor in industrialisation. Britainââ¬â¢s overseas military successes factored in the related developments of colonialism and slavery: both had prominent roles in the capital formation which financed the industrial revolution. Simply put, capital generated in the colonies had been steadily accumulating in Britain since the late seventeenth century, and much of it went into joint-stock companies, investment houses, or often directly into the enterprise and fixed capital itself. Much of it also went back overseas: however, when it did so, it often did so to finance orders for British-manufactured goods which further fanned domestic industrialization. The ââ¬Ëtriangular tradeââ¬â¢ in British manufacturing output, African slaves, and West Indian produce ultimately concluded in the accretion of private capital reserves back in the UK, all seeking dividends through land or other investment. As Williams points out, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦the industrial expansion required finance. What man in the first three-quarters o f the eighteenth century was better able to afford the ready capital than a West Indian sugar planter or a Liverpool slave trader?ââ¬â¢ (7) Many of the best known names of Britainââ¬â¢s industrial and commercial scene were the net beneficiaries of capital generated overseas, from either colonial or plantation sources. As Williams again indicates, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦It was the capital accumulated from the West Indian trade that financed James Watt and the steam engine.ââ¬â¢ Engineering luminaries such as Boulton and Watt received advances from established plantation interests, as did the architects of the Great Western Railway: one of the leading banking families to transfer capital from their slave owning activities directly into financial services were the Barclays, precursors to the modern day Barclays bank. (8.) The American War of Independence, the eventual abolition of British slavery, and increased competition form South America eventually meant that these forms of revenue fell into decline. However, as Bayly reports, they were soon replaced, not only by new forms of income from other territories, but by massive n ew markets for raw materials and Britainââ¬â¢s industrial output: ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦by 1815 the nation could celebrate an astonishing, indeed providential, recovery of fortunes.ââ¬â¢ (9) It has to be recognised however that the capital accumulating in Britainââ¬â¢s investment houses and stock market did not find its way into a managerially static or vernacular economic arena. The eighteenth century also saw the emergence of a range of management theories and theories of the firm, which were implicit in the rationalization of the commercial and manufacturing enterprise. As Williams puts it, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦laissez-faire became a practice in the new industry long before it penetrated the text books as orthodox economic theory.ââ¬â¢ (10) Adam Smith, Thomas Malthus , Robert Torrens and others fashioned the discipline of economics from the remnants of the former ideas of political arithmetic, producing a technical and predictive framework which combined with new technology to give the UK a new form of economic staple. Classical economics has continued to be re-worked and refined ever since. As Cohen and Cyert point out, ââ¬ËFor the purposes of the classical theory, the profit maximization assumption may be perfectly adequate. It is clear however, that as one asks a different set of questionsthe profit maximization assumption is neither necessary nor sufficientââ¬â¢ (11) It nevertheless continues to pervade contemporary economic thought. New ideas about the economy were not the only intellectual developments creating change in the age of discovery and industrialisation: they were accompanied by new political ideas with profound implications for British expansion. In Marxist parlance, Englandââ¬â¢s own ââ¬Ëbourgeois revolutionââ¬â¢ ââ¬â the middle classes wresting power from monarchical or aristocratic control ââ¬â had already passed in the form of the English Civil War. In the eighteenth century the American and French Revolutions helped determine the character of British growth by shaping domestic political institutions and providing a further impetus for overseas expansion. There was a sense in which the social, economic and political processes bound up with industrialisation had to break down the protocols associated with monarchical and aristocratic control before the transformation could really be achieved. Capitalism had to supplant mercantilism, tariffs and protectionism had to be removed, mar kets had to be open to competition, and the vested interests who opposed it had to be pushed aside. As Williams expresses it, Adam Smithââ¬â¢s economic tour de force in the Wealth of Nations was ââ¬Ë â⬠¦the philosophical antecedent of the American Revolution. Both were twin products of the same cause, the brake applied by the mercantile system on the development of the productive power of England and her colonies.ââ¬â¢ Consequently, he adds, ââ¬ËAdam Smithââ¬â¢s role was to berate intellectually ââ¬Å"the mean and malignant expedientsâ⬠of a system which the armies of George Washington dealt a mortal wound on the battlefields of America.ââ¬â¢ (12) After the loss of the American colonies, the British government seized upon the idea that, in future, administration needed to be more focused on the needs of the market a the necessary accompaniment to industrial expansion. British goods needed markets, and British government needed expertise to obtain and reta in those markets. As Bayly observes, ââ¬ËThe disasters of the American Civil War had produced an interlocking network of parliamentary committees with their own experts; so administrations also had to know more and be better prepared.ââ¬â¢ (13) Britainââ¬â¢s industrial progress was, however, not uniform or linear in nature. As Bayly reports, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦deepened by cyclical depressions operating in a more integrated world economy and by the continuing splutter of local wars which often marked the advance of settler capitalism into indigenous societies.ââ¬â¢ (14) Britainââ¬â¢s technological and managerial expertise could not insulate it from seemingly inevitable financial crises and recession which, as Hilton reports, plagued it throughout its period of supposed industrial might. ââ¬ËThere had been monetary and commercial disorders in the eighteenth centuryâ⬠¦1788, 1793, 1797â⬠¦but nothing to compare with the crises of 1825-6, 1837-9, 1847-8, 1857, and 1866.ââ¬â¢ Perhaps more important than the empirical details of these crises was their impact upon economic and social thinking, and in particular the way in which blame was apportioned for such disasters. A Hilton again explains, ââ¬Ëâ⬠¦contemp orary analysis concentrated on twoâ⬠¦types of explanationâ⬠¦.monetary mismanagement by government or Bank of England, and human avarice and greed.ââ¬â¢ (15) The deep and pernicious nature of these crises eventually prompted the creation of the economic governance which still prevails today. In the 1770ââ¬â¢s, the Bank of England note replaced the private bank notes which had circulated previously. (16). However, a more unified financial system meant that financial crises were themselves more pervasive and all-embracing. Limited liability legislation, as well as regulation of monopolies, mergers, and competition, helped protect individuals from the worst effects of economic downturns. What the industrial revolution and associated market creation implied for the UK business community was a increasingly close relationship with a globalizing economy. The enormous wealth created by this ââ¬â for some individuals ââ¬â meant that the economy was now vulnerable to uphe avals far beyond the control of the London stock market or government. This, arguably, encapsulates the single clearest link between the society which shaped the industrial revolution and contemporary social conditions: i.e., the individuals whose contributions are most important to industrialization were those with the least stake in its benefits. Academic debates as to whether or not a genuine ââ¬Ëclass consciousnessââ¬â¢ was engendered by the industrial revolution are, ultimately, inconclusive. Few can realistically deny, however, that industrialisation demanded a massive influx of skilled, semi-skilled, but overwhelmingly unskilled labour, whom technological production could deprive of a skilled wage. As Gray points out, ââ¬ËIndustrial change was associated with crises of gender and class relations, and struggles over factory regulation can be seen in the context of a gendered class consciousness.ââ¬â¢ (17). In other words, both men and women realized that their livelihoods and earning power in an industrial context depended upon whether or not their work was defined as skilled. De-skilling was, it may be argued, the necessary precursor to the enormous industrial profits generated in the factory system: significant surplus value, the disparity between the amount spent to produce an item, and the amount it sold for ââ¬â could only be maintained at a realistic level if costs were low and margins were wide. It was therefore no accident that unskilled female and child labour were highly significant in populating the new factory system which remains the emblematic representation of the industrial revolution in Britain. The same processes of de-skilling, and an essentially exploitative relationship, arguably feature in the new globalization taking place in the contemporary economy. It is interesting to speculate on whether these common relations of production, the taproot of collectivized and organized labour movements, will produce a new variant on the trade unionism thrown up by the domestic British industrial revo lution. The same may be asked of official intervention in the manufacturing process. As Gray points out, ââ¬ËAttempts to regulate factory employment can be traced back, almost to the beginnings of factory production itself. The restructuring of labour markets and employment relations duringâ⬠¦.indutrialisation was accompanied by a series of overlapping debates about protective labour laws, the poor laws and statutory or customary controls over wages, prices, and commercial practice.ââ¬â¢ (18) This historical process is arguably on-going, as successive waves of de-skilled labour are moved around the globalizing economy to meet fluctuating demand, often in uncontrolled conditions. The practices of child and female labour may have stopped in the domestic economy, but they have by no means been eliminated from the global arena. This is notwithstanding the appearance of ââ¬ËThird Wayââ¬â¢ economics, and the supposed elimination of class difference. Footnotes 1.) Focus Bpr from Dell Inc.
Focus BPR from Dell Inc. In recent centuries, market conditions are changing all the time. Tens of thousands of enterprises are faced with severe challenges due to the increasingly fierce competition. The competition makes customers have more choices for commodities as well as higher requests to services. What should companies do for the sake of gaining a foothold and developing their own advantages? Most of them had already found the answer ââ¬â business process reengineering. Business process reengineering, which also called BPR, is ââ¬Å"the analysis and redesign of workflow within and between enterprisesâ⬠(Baltzan and Phillips 30).Companies will think over the existing process, redesign the process and then establish new process structures according to customers demand by using advanced manufacturing technology, information technology and modern management means, so as to realize great improvements. One of the BPR cases occurs at Dell Incorporated, one of the largest P C vendors in the world. Unlike the rival Compaq Computer Corporation, which uses a vast network of resellers, Dell sells all its systems directly to its customers (Zuckerman 18).It recently redesigned its computers so that each computer consisting many of the same component parts. The company is able to minimize the inventories it hold in order to reduce the inventory cost. Stocking a few parts instead of large work makes Dell be able to respond quickly to the market condition, for example, emergence of new technology, change of customer demand and overall prices standard. Dell even wants to go further. The company had experienced a new factory in Austin, where the new plant would have nowhere to storage. We believe that if you donââ¬â¢t have any place for inventory, then you wonââ¬â¢t have any inventory. â⬠Mr. Dell said (Zuckerman 22). Dell will not begin to produce a machine until it has received an order from customer. They do not have to bother to ponder what clients really need, because customers will tell them directly. When a customer places an order, the custom parts requested by the customer are automatically sent to the manufacturer for shipment (Business Process Reengineering). It can reduce the maintenance cost for inventory. However, BPR could be a double-edged sword. If Dell only builds a machine when customers tell them to, it will take some time. While other computer manufacturers might have already sold several finished products during Dellââ¬â¢s producing period. It needs to weigh between the time value and the inventory cost. The success that Dell achieves owes to the understanding of business process reengineering. Corporations should monitor the existing system and break the traditional organization structure to reengineer so as to make great improvements in cost, quality and service.Works Cited Baltzan, Paige and Amy Phillips. Daycares Should not be Allowed to Give Toddlers Milk - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 5 Words: 1412 Downloads: 1 Date added: 2018/12/19 Category Health Essay Type Argumentative essay Level High school Tags: Children Essay Did you like this example? There has been an issue on whether the children in daycares should be given breast milk or formulas. This is an issue that has brought about mixed reactions from various scientists, daycare providers as well as some mothers. Not everyone advocates for the idea of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Daycares Should not be Allowed to Give Toddlers Milk" essay for you Create order While some mothers have adopted using whole milk and formulas for their toddlers some claim that they actually prefer breastfeeding and others even delay the weaning process. Daycare providers who are against the idea of mothers providing expressed milk have given various issues on why they are adamant to the idea. Again turning to the scientists in many cases they insist on exclusive breastfeeding if the mothers are in a position to do so owing to the multiple benefits of the milk to the baby. Others on the other side claim it is important but not necessary especially in settings that formula can be used. What does the government say? Policies have are for the idea of breastfeeding and even offer more incentives for those mothers who breastfeed. Additionally, there is no policy that prohibits children in daycares from taking the breast-milk. The dilemma comes in for parents who want to enroll their toddlers in daycares, should their children be allowed to continue taking their expre ssed milk or should they adapt to formulas? Mothers who are separated from their infants face a great deal of stress under the best of circumstances. The use, storage, and handling of their breast milk in daycare settings should not become another burden of concern for them. Breast milk is the best nutrition and health protection for the baby, whether it is delivered directly through nursing at mothers breast or from a bottle by a caring child care provider. This was La Leche Leagues statement to daycare providers. This is a clear summary of the feelings of most mothers who have chosen to exclusively breastfeed. Every mother has a right to their toddlers feeding and nutrition habits and therefore imposing restrictions is actually going against their rights. Despite the fact that those who are against their children taking formulas have a choice to take their toddlers to schools with more friendly policies, they shouldnt be discriminated in any way. Actually, the law states their choice and protects their right to breastfeed cl early under the federal Sex Discrimination Act 1984. According to the law any daycare provider profit or non-profit cannot refuse an application or fail to offer places for the children who are breastfed, has no permission to ask the mother to stop breastfeeding when a child joins daycare, must let the mother to either provide expressed milk or breastfeed in their premises, has to feed your child on breast milk if thats what you please and support the mother in this as long as the child is in their hands. Some daycares today are for the idea that children adapt formulas and other supplements and actually start taking solids after the age of 6 months. However, Section 407.210 item #21 of the Administrative Code for IL State Daycare Licensing Standards states very clearly that Children between 1 and 2 years of age who are not on human milk or infant formula shall be served whole milk unless low-fat milk is recommended in writing by the childs medical provider. This is a clear indication that a toddler whose mother provides expressed mil k then the formulas shouldnt be given in place of this milk or even as a supplement. Some daycares raise concerns that other babies may take the expressed milk that is not from their mothers. They claim that such accidents occur especially when the expressed breast milk is in open cups. That is an issue but not strong enough to deny these mothers their rights. Just like it is a concern for children with allergies for cow milk to be provided with alternative milk so it is such an issue. Others complain of babies who have issues with bottles but that a slight issue that can be solved by either spoon feeding the child or asking the parent to provide a Sippy-cup. Therefore this a supervision concern and not a policy concern. Daycares against breast milk for toddlers ask for notes from pediatricians if the child must be on special diet. In the first place breast milk is actually a necessity for a toddler hence no medical notes are required even the policies dont state anything of the sort. Most management has misunderstood the USDA program that underwrites the cost of food and labor for children at daycares and other institutions even for adults too. This should not be the case since the USDA is very clear with its policies. After the age of 12 months, the USDA specifies that the child be fed whole milk (which the USDA assumes will be whole cowu2019s milk), but the FDA notes that u201cBreastmilk meets the requirement of a milk substitute and can be served to children over the age of 12 months.u201d Mom may need to have a note on file saying that she is providing expressed breast milk for her child (a medical statement is not required), and the facility will need to document that the parent provided breast milk (or any other foods) so they will get credit for having provided the proper foods even if they did not purchase all of them. There are other complains from the daycare providers pertaining the same issue. They claim that for the toddler room is the last place that a teacher would want to be. Constant attention is required for each child, they to be fed at the right in the correct time spans and the teacher has to ensure that all requests by parents have been met. Additionally, the teacher has to take notes on the progress of the toddlers just in case there is anything that the parent needs know. They also have to ensure that diapers are often changed. As a result of these tasks, many will complain that having a child who is not taking formulas means more task for the teacher since in some daycares separate labeling of the milk bottles has to be done. Also, the teachers are also instructed to wear gloves when handling breast milk in such daycares. It is irrefutable that the teachers in daycares have lots to do but some of the extra restrictions are uncalled for. Additionally, the daycares could consider ha ving only a manageable number of toddlers. There are also cases where the daycares claim that the milk provided is insufficient. In most cases, the babies tend to take more formula than they do with breast milk. Some providers start pressurizing parents of such babies to adapt the formulas on grounds that the milk they put on the bottles is not enough. The mothers know what is best for their babies some do not want the stomachs of their toddler stretched by lots of milk. Actually what is important is the amount of nutrition, therefore, the pressure should not be there. Breast milk remains the best food for a toddler. Daycares should not in any way prohibit mothers from providing expressed breast milk for their toddlers. Not only does this milk reduce the chances of getting infections like ear infections for toddlers but also provides sufficient nutrition for the child. Though science doesnt give unequivocal study on exclusive breastfeeding, a mother who chooses to do so should be left unquestioned. Daycares should let mothers choose what is right for their babies. All the excuses given are concerns about supervision and management hence the ball is more in their court. Work Cited Thompson, Amanda L., et al.
